Wedding attire 101

The wedding venue is a good indicator as to how formal or informal your guests should dress.

During the wedding planning process, the bride and groom need to decide on a wedding dress code for guests. This may come naturally, depending on the location of the ceremony and or reception, or it may need to be laid out for your guests. The wedding venue is a huge indicator as to how formal or informal you should expect your wedding guests to dress. Here are some factors that may help you pinpoint what type of dress code your wedding day will look like.

– A beach wedding: This setting suggests a very laid-back vibe – guests may even wear flip flops and Hawaiian shirts unless you tell them otherwise.  The same informality may occur for an outdoor wedding and reception. Usually, we advise women attending these types of weddings to do day dresses, and men to sport khakis and a button-down shirt.

– Religious ceremony: The formality of a wedding with a church ceremony can be very tricky for guests to navigate. There's a fine line between too casual and way overdressed for this venue. Some places of worship may be more strict about dress code than others, so make sure you tell guests who aren't familiar with your chosen venue what you would wear during service.

– A late night reception: Weddings ceremonies that occur during the late afternoon followed by a late evening reception are usually more dressy occasions. Formal venues like ballrooms, hotels and other specific locations such as a library or museum are appropriate venues to require men to wear tuxedos or make the dress code black tie only. Cocktail dresses or evening gowns are right on target for these wedding locations.

If you are adamant about your wedding guest dress code, we suggest you put a note on the wedding invitation that states the formality of the wedding. "Black tie" indicates a formal dress code whereas a daytime wedding invitation may read "Dress in your Sunday best." These hints can save guests the agony over trying to decide what to wear and will keep you from feeling disappointed if your great uncle shows up in blue jeans.
