The Beauty Of The Orient, The Peony Flower

2014 is being called “the year of the flower” and the peony is certainly the flower to watch this year! With its delicate shape and sweet smell, the romantic peony flower has been capturing brides’ attention. Each flower can grow up to 8 inches in diameter with an airy gathering of thin, ruffled petals swirling around a central point. With a large count of tissue-thin petals, peonies evoke a beautiful sense of fragility and abundance.

History & Meaning:

Peonies are perhaps the most appropriate wedding flowers in terms of their meaning. They signify a long and happy marriage as well as prosperity, compassion, and good health.

Originating in the orient, the peony flower has a long and noble history in countries like China, Japan, and Mongolia. The Chinese have cultivated peonies for over 2,000 years and not just for their imperial beauty, but also for their healing properties. Peonies often appear as the subject of many beautiful Chinese brush paintings since they are thought to bring good luck. These lovely blooms are the national flowers of China and Mongolia, where they are said to express peace (when in full bloom), value, and nobility.

Availability:

Peonies are available in white, pink, magenta, red, burgundy, peach, and yellow. They are available from March through the end of June, perfect for a late spring or early summer wedding. If you plan to have a fall or winter wedding, you may be able to find burgundy peonies in November and December. The grand and delicate look of these luscious flowers makes an extravagant statement in any bouquet, centerpiece, or garden.
