Naked Cakes: Go Au Naturel With Your Wedding Cake!

2014 Trend Alert: The Naked Cake

When someone mentions “wedding cake”, what is the first image that comes to mind? Is it a tiered cake fully covered in white frosting or smooth white fondant, with perhaps a few colorful details added in icing or cake floral? While it’s traditional for a baker to finish off your cake with a few layers of tasty buttercream or fondant, the cake can actually look just as beautiful without it. Many couples are falling in love with a simpler take on wedding cake, called the “naked cake”. This trend forgoes the sweet frosting coating to showcase a more natural look and taste. The idea is to highlight the flavor of the cake and its fillings. If you like the idea of a naked cake, consider dressing it up with one of these fun ideas:

Flowers

Add a natural touch of beauty to your naked cake with a few well-placed blossoms. Use some of the same flowers featured in your bouquet and centerpieces to tie your whole day together. Don’t forget, your flowers can either be real, silk, or crafted from sugar. Talk to your florist or baker about which flowers are best to use when decorating your naked cake.

If you want to add flowers to your cake but are unsure which ones to choose, read our previous article on guidelines to follow.

Fruit

Fruit will add two things to your cake: lots of color and plenty of flavor. Scatter different fruits throughout each tier, or place a bundle of various fruits on top for a dramatic display. Get a uniform look by using fruit that’s all one color, create your own colorful mix with fruits of all different colors, or split up your fruit to have a different color on every tier. You can even use fruit in different shades of the same color to create ombre layers!

Succulents

Having a summer wedding? Succulents are born to take the Arizona heat and will last longer on your cake than cut flowers. Even if your cake is sitting outdoors, your succulent décor will stand up to the hot temperatures and add some gorgeous texture and color to your naked cake.

Cake

Sometimes the focal point of a naked cake is actually the cake itself! With a few drops of food dye or colorful flavoring additions, your baker can create a stunning masterpiece unlike anything you’ve ever seen at a wedding before!
