2014 Trend Alert: Victorian Elegance Meets Modern Style

As we move into the spring/summer season of 2014 we are beginning to notice a decline in the popular “rustic chic” wedding theme. Taking its place is a gorgeous new theme that blends Victorian elegance with the striking simplicity of a contemporary wedding. This latest wedding trend, which we like to call “Neo-Victorian” or “Modern Victorian” if you prefer, takes most of its inspiration from PBS’s critically acclaimed TV series, Downton Abbey. The hit drama has influenced many fashion trends in recent years. This latest wedding trend is an adaptation of the styles you might expect to see on the show, but tempered with a contemporary twist. Expect to still see the timeless, old world style of the Victorian era, but with a bright, clean and modern finish. Check out some of the ideas and tips below to start planning your modern Victorian wedding!

Creating Your Modern Victorian Wedding:

  • Start with the gown: Choose a vintage, Victorian-inspired gown to create the central inspiration for your overall look. These gowns are usually made from a flowing material and typically have a lot of movement in the skirt. Many of these dresses will have some sort of layering and are likely to have at least one “illusion” detail in the back or skirt.

  • It’s a balancing act: Details really matter with this wedding theme. The idea is to have many elegant décor items to give the guests a feeling of luxury, and yet have every element blend together perfectly to remain clean and uncluttered. Eclectic design elements have to be balanced and held together with a strong and simple color palette. This is perhaps the most challenging aspect of creating this wedding look. Your florist and/or wedding planner both have an eye for detail and form and will be able to bring all the elements together.

Keep the Victorian flair with plenty of intricate flourishes and embellishments but keep the look clean and uncluttered by sticking with a simple color palette as in this all white and cream dessert table.

  • Perfectly mismatched bridal party: Mirror the same eclectic style in your bridal party by encouraging your bridesmaids to wear different dresses. Of course you will have to set some limitations in order to preserve your wedding vision. We recommend either having your maids wear slightly different dress styles (stick to either short or long dresses though, no mixing of lengths!) in the same color, or have them all wear the same dress in different shades.

  • Elements of tasteful grandeur: Make sure to incorporate a few statement pieces as anchors that will really give your decor some character. Think royal luxury as opposed to flashy bling.

Imagine wowing your guests with this gorgeous statement piece! The gilded metal designs and overall shape are very reminiscent of the Victorian chaise lounge, yet the streamlined shape of the cushions speaks of modern sophistication as well.

For The Downton Bride

For brides who want a truly authentic Downton experience, the exact tiara that Lady Mary (portrayed by actress Michelle Dockery) wore for her wedding to Matthew Crawley is available to rent from the British jeweler, Bentley & Skinner. For the hefty price tag of 1,250 pounds per day (roughly $2,000) and a security deposit of 125,000 pounds (roughly $200,000), any bride can reserve an authentic piece of Downton Abbey history for her very own wedding day.

Lady Mary’s gorgeous tiara features diamonds set in white gold in the form of a leafy garland with small flowers. The piece is about 45 carats and can actually break apart into two brooches or hair pieces.
